The Gift of Hope

Our Gift of Hope initiative encompasses education support, with our main project that of The Kindy Project, the construction of a pre-school building in the Penan community of Long Lamam, Ulu Baram. This project was undertaken between 2016-2020, including conceptualization and the time required to raise funds for construction.

This project was undertaken to address the infrastructure needs of Tadika Pawah, a pre-school in this remote rural community operated by Persatuan Perkembangan Pendidikan Orang Pribumi. Our intent was to construct an engaging school building to entice students, with many experiencing education for the first time in this community, to attend. The brief was also to construct boarding facilities to allow children to continue attending whilst parents are away earning a living, as well as to act as a training ground for when they attend primary boarding school away from the village.

Due to its remote location accessible by rapids, most of the materials for the build was obtained by the villagers from the surrounding vicinity. Our aim was also to engage villagers to construct the building with supervision, thus imparting construction skills to the community.

The project was completed at the end of 2019 and also serves as an after-school day-care centre for the village as well as a potential venue for community events.

During the duration of the project, The Gift of Hope also covered student sponsorships to assist the operating costs of the pre-school.
